The first step was a thorough inspection of the chimney to assess the extent of the damage. We identified deteriorated mortar joints and a significant hole in the flaunching that needed urgent repair. - Step 2: Removing Damaged Mortar
We began the repair process by removing the damaged and crumbling mortar from the joints between the bricks. Using specialized tools, we carefully raked out the old mortar to a suitable depth, ensuring a clean surface for the new mortar to bond. - Step 3: Repointing the Chimney
Once the old mortar was removed, we repointed the chimney by applying new mortar to the joints. This process involves packing the mortar tightly into the joints and smoothing it out to create a strong, weatherproof seal. Repointing not only restores the chimney’s appearance but also reinforces its structural integrity. - Step 4: Repairing the Chimney Flaunching
Next, we addressed the hole in the chimney top by repairing the flaunching. We removed the damaged flaunching and applied a new layer of mortar, carefully shaping it to ensure water is directed away from the chimney. Proper flaunching is essential for preventing water ingress and protecting the chimney from further damage. - Step 5: Final Inspection and Cleanup
After completing the pointing and flaunching repairs, we conducted a final inspection to ensure the chimney was fully restored and watertight. We also cleaned up the work area, removing any debris and ensuring the site was left in excellent condition.
